Carbon Registry

The Climate Change Institute Carbon Registry contains the records of issued unique carbon credits known as Verified Carbon Units or VCUs.

Each VCU represents a reduction or removal of one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) achieved by a project. VCUs are characterized by a number of quality assurance principles which are confirmed through the project validation and verification process and Verra’s review and approval.

VCUs are ultimately purchased and retired by an end user as a means of offsetting their emissions. All VCU issuance and retirement records are publicly available on the Verra Registry.

VCUs are issued to Registry account holders such as The Climate Change Institute registry account listed on the Verra Registry.

Registry account holders are companies or organizations which are interested in holding and transacting VCUs, and are typically project developers, carbon credit brokers, or other entities involved in carbon markets. Registry account holders must pass strict “Know-Your-Customer” background checks prior to opening an account. Individuals may not open a registry account, and registry account holders are not authorized to hold VCUs on behalf of individuals.

Through our partners at CTX, the Institute acquires a block of VCUs. These are transferred into our Verra Registry Account and are then allocated or ‘retired’ to various transactions. Each block of VCUs is called ‘Carbon Offset Group’ or COG, and is given a COG#. Each COG has a serial number and is equivalent to 100 tonnes of C02e.

If you have received a Carbon Offset Certificate from the Climate Change Institute, you can see the transaction on our website and can verify it on the Verra Registry. At this registry you can check that the serial numbers on the Climate Change Institute Carbon Registry matches those on the Verra Registry.

You can also see the project description and information that the certificate has financed.
